Sex therapy - Your Questions Answered

When can Relate help?

Relate can help where people are having problems with their sex life due to physical or emotional reasons. Relate sex therapists see lots of people with sexual difficulties such as:

  • Loss of desire
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Premature ejaculation
  • Pain on intercourse

93 per cent of the people we see tell us that we help them make their sexual relationships significantly better.

What happens during sex therapy?

Firstly you will meet with a sex therapist. The therapist will take time to explore with you what you want to achieve or change in your sexual relationship and what the reasons behind this might be. The therapist will talk with you about the best way forward in your circumstances

Where Relate can help, you will have regular sessions with your sex therapist during which you'll be given a programme of exercises to do at home and discuss your progress (you will never be asked to undertake any sexual tasks during a session)

How long will it take?

Relate deals with every client's situation individually and the length of time therapy takes depends on your circumstances. Relate deals with every client's situation individually and the length of time therapy takes depends on your circumstances. Sessions are usually weekly or fortnightly(but can be longer). We have a suggested session duration, and our team will be able to guide you as to the expected durations.

Who comes to Relate?

Relate sees people individually as well as in couples. People who come for sex therapy can be part of a couple, single, in a same-sex relationship, young or old. A lot of people are referred to Relate by their GP but anyone can choose to contact us direct. When you contact us please make it clear that you would like to see a sex therapist

Is there a charge?

We have a limited number of fully funded IAPT Couple Therapy for Depression, Children, Young People, Family and Psychosexual Therapy sessions available and the wait for these spaces may be substantially longer than non-funded spaces. For Caring and Sharing clients all sessions are fully funded. People attending all other Relate counselling services are asked to make a payment towards the cost of their counselling or therapy and a payment scale will be emailed as part of a Registration Pack. If you live out of the Bradford District the price for all services will be £35 for registration and Assessment appointment, then £90 for all following sessions.

Any referrals received from a statutory organisation (for example GP referrals) will be chargeable according to our payment scale.
